JAKARTA - BYD opens the opportunity for the public to help determine the name of its latest flagship sedan which is currently known as the Great Han. General Manager of BYD Dynasty Network Lu Tian, uploaded six name candidates through the social media Weibo for internet users to choose.
Reported by Carnewschina, Friday, June 5, the new model will be marketed as a pure electric vehicle (BEV) with a claimed range of more than 1,000 km based on the CLTC standard and supported by fast charging technology.
This move was made shortly after BYD opened the pre-sale period for the Great Tang (Datang) SUV. The model, which carries a 1,000V high-voltage architecture, is offered starting at 250,000 yuan.
Market enthusiasm for the vehicle is quite high, with more than 100,000 orders recorded in less than two weeks. The high demand even made BYD postpone the official launch to ensure that production capacity is able to meet consumer demand.
Meanwhile, Lu Tian revealed that the company had screened a number of name proposals through several selection stages until the last six candidates were left. The six names are Great Han (Dahan), Han 9, Han Ultra, Han Tianxia, Xiaohan, and Han Chitu.
From the results of the provisional voting, the name Great Han became the most popular choice with 1,727 votes. The figure is far behind Han Tianxia who is in second place with 254 votes.
Interestingly, the last three names on the final list have a strong connection with Chinese cultural elements. This is in line with BYD's strategy to bring and introduce the culture of its country to the global market through its product line.
In terms of design, the BYD Great Han is projected to come as a large-sized sedan with a length of around 5.2 meters. This car carries a fastback silhouette with a sloping roof line, a low front hood, multi-spoke rims with chrome accents, and a different fascia appearance compared to the current Han model.
At the back, the sedan is equipped with elongated lights that stretch from side to side. In addition, LiDAR sensors are placed on the roof of the vehicle to support advanced driving assistance features.
Entering the cabin, the Great Han adopts a three-spoke steering wheel with the Han logo in the center. The transmission lever is now positioned in the steering column so that the central console area feels more spacious and can accommodate a wireless charger and hidden storage space.
Like a number of other recent BYD models, this sedan also relies on a floating model infotainment screen as the center of control for various vehicle features. Previously, it was revealed that the Great Han EV will use an LFP-based Blade Battery 2.0 battery.
The technology is claimed to allow charging from 10 percent to 97 percent in just nine minutes. For the rear wheel drive (RWD) variant, the mileage is said to reach 1,008 km in a single full charge, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) version offers a cruising range of up to 880 km.
