JAKARTA - In the midst of increasingly competitive market challenges, Nissan Motor Co. has finally unveiled a major strategy to rise from sluggishness. In a press conference held in Yokohama on Tuesday, April 14, Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa outlined a long-term management vision that will completely change the face of the Japanese automotive manufacturer.

This step is not just a product refresh, but a drastic technological and structural transformation.

The main focus of this "revival" strategy is artificial intelligence (AI) based autonomous driving technology. Nissan targets this advanced system to be embedded in 90 percent of its entire future model lineup.

This new era will begin sooner than expected. Nissan confirmed that the next generation of autonomous technology will be introduced by the end of fiscal year 2027 through their premium MPV, the Elgrand. The latest Elgrand model itself is scheduled to be launched on the market in the summer of this year, signaling Nissan's readiness to adopt smart technology on a mass scale.

Portfolio Rationalization and New Ammunition

To increase efficiency, Nissan will undergo a strict diet on its product line. The number of models marketed will be significantly reduced from 56 models to only 45 models. This strategy aims to allow the company to focus more on vehicles that have high demand and greater innovation value.

New X‑Trail and Rogue Hybrid e‑POWER

Despite the reduced number of models, Nissan is still preparing new ammunition in the environmentally friendly segment, including the latest version of the X-Trail Hybrid of the popular SUV which is more efficient, then there is the Juke Electric

Factory Closure and Layoffs

However, this vision of the future comes with heavy consequences. As part of the restructuring measures to improve the company's finances, Nissan announced plans to close seven factories in Japan and abroad. One of those affected is the strategic Oppama plant in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture.

This efficiency step also involves a massive reduction in manpower, namely as many as 20,000 employees globally.

"This is a difficult but crucial decision to ensure Nissan remains relevant and competitive in the new era of fully automated and electrified mobility," Espinosa said in his presentation based on a Kyodo News report.
