JAKARTA - The uncertainty that still shrouds the global automotive industry has not hindered the performance of Indonesian vehicle exports. Throughout 2025, the delivery of domestically produced vehicles to international markets actually achieved the highest achievement, marking the resilience and competitiveness of the national automotive industry.

Chairman of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Industry Association, Putu Juli Ardika, said that the export performance was worth celebrating. Throughout last year, Indonesia managed to channel 518,212 units of vehicles to 93 destination countries, a new record for the country's automotive industry.

"Of this number, commercial vehicles also contributed significantly with 20,326 units. This figure confirms Indonesia's role as one of the important production bases in the region," Putu told reporters, quoted on Tuesday, February 24.

According to him, this achievement is a strong signal that domestically produced vehicles are increasingly accepted in the global market. The combination of quality, efficiency, and technology offered is considered capable of competing with products from other countries.

Currently, the national motor vehicle production capacity reaches around 2.59 million units per year. With such capacity, the Indonesian automotive industry is considered to still have great opportunities to increase production volumes, both to meet domestic market needs and exports.

"So for 2025, Gaikindo is optimistic that the absorption of production will be able to maximize the production capacity of the automotive industry which in 2025 will reach 1,200,000-an, 1,200,000-an of production both domestically and for export," said Putu.

He also added that optimism does not only apply in the short term. Gaikindo believes that with a strong production foundation, the utilization of the capacity of the national automotive industry can continue to be optimized until it enters the 2030 decade.

With the support of large manufacturing capacity and maintained demand, the automotive sector is expected to continue to play a role as one of the main drivers of national economic growth.

On the other hand, Gaikindo has set a target of selling four-wheeled vehicles in 2026 as many as 850 thousand units. This target is the result of a joint agreement between automotive industry players in Indonesia.

"So, basically we agreed yesterday, this year we set a target of 850 thousand units," said Gaikindo Secretary Kukuh Kumara some time ago.

Even though the target has been set, Kukuh emphasized that the figure is still flexible. Changes in market conditions and new policies are considered to affect sales realization.

"If there are new developments, new policies, maybe we will see again," he said.

Gaikindo also considers a number of factors that have the potential to affect market performance this year. The momentum of the long Idul Fitri holiday, for example, often encourages the interest to buy vehicles, although on the other hand it can reduce the operational days of the factory and have an impact on production volume.
