JAKARTA Two new names in the automotive world, Togg from Turkey and firefly from China made brilliant achievements in the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) safety test. Each of the first models of both brands managed to achieve the highest five-star ranking, even setting a very high new safety standard.

As a result, with the emergence of Togg and firefly setting new safety standards, consumers in Europe are now increasingly benefiting from the choice of electric cars that are not only efficient and stylish, but also do not sacrifice safety aspects.

Reporting from the Euro NCAP page, Monday, September 8, Togg, the newly founded car company in 2018, managed to bring its first two models, T10F (electric family sedan) and T10X (electric SUV), to the safest car lineup in Europe. T10F recorded an impressive adult passenger protection score of 95 percent, while T10X was no less great than 94 percent. Both also showed solid performance in protecting child passengers (85 percent), pedestrians, cyclists, and had a reliable driver assistance system. With the ambition of exporting one million EVs to the European market by 2030, Istanbul-based Togg proved that they are ready to compete.

Not to be outdone, the new firefly 'brand' of the Chinese giant group, NIO 'launched its first electric car with the same name. This tiny EV car managed to steal attention in the supermini segment, competing closely with models like Mini Cooper E and Renault 5. Most amazingly, firefly achieved an Adult Passenger protection score of 96 percent, the highest figure ever achieved by any passenger car the Euro NCAP has tested since early 2024. This achievement proves that the size of the car is not the only safety determinant; engineering innovation and security commitment can generate a small, incredibly safe car.

Overall, Euro NCAP experts tested 16 new models and reported that most of them managed to reach the maximum five-star ranking. Among the models that achieved the perfect rating were Audi Q4 e-tron, Hyundai IONIQ 9, MINI Aceman, and smart #5. The three-door MINI Cooper also continues to amaze it with its tough performance.

Chinese Brand Domination

However, not all models managed to reach the highest ranking. Four models, namely BMW Series 1, Citroatur C5 Aircross, Suzuki e VITARA, and their twin Toyota Urban Cruiser, only won four stars. BMW Series 1 is considered weak in protecting the driver's chest and legs in the hit test. Meanwhile, Citromen C5 Aircross lost points in the category of Users of Rentan Roads and Safety Assistance Systems.

Interestingly, five other Chinese automakers are also showing very competitive safety levels. Models such as AION V (SUV), EXLANTIX ES (sedes), IM IM6 (crossover), and BYD DOLPHIN SURF (hatback) managed to prove that the Chinese auto industry was able to create vehicles with global safety standards.

Despite winning five stars, two models of Lynk & Co 08 and Volkswagen ID.Buzz are clearly losing their fifth star due to pedestrian pelvis protection which is considered less than optimal. This shows how tight the standards applied by Euro NCAP are in ensuring the safety of all road users.
