JAKARTA - Volkswagen has begun series production of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE in Saxony. A total of 1,990 units will be built at two plants in Zwickau and Dresden.

This model was developed in collaboration with performance sportswear brand BOGNER, part of the Munich-based luxury sports fashion company, just like the legendary Golf II Fire and Ice, which was a surprise success in the 1990s and now enjoys cult status among enthusiasts.

As a tribute to the original model's debut year, only 1,990 units of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE will be available for order.

Danny Auerswald, spokesperson for the Board of Management at Volkswagen Saxony, said the ID.3 is a true Saxony product and marked the beginning of the electric mobility era for the Volkswagen Group at the end of 2019. With more than one million electric vehicles from the Volkswagen, Audi, and CUPRA brands produced at the Zwickau and Dresden sites,

"Our team has demonstrated that they have mastered the transformation, technically, structurally, and, most importantly, mentally. We will deliver the first ten ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE cars in time for the IAA and the ID. Meeting in Locarno. I am confident that with this special model, we are seamlessly following on from the surprising success of the 1990s," he said, as quoted on his official website, Tuesday, September 2.

Volkswagen Saxony General Works Council Chairman Uwe Kunstmann said the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is an impressive special model that is a perfect fit for the brand and Volkswagen Saxony. After almost six years, the ID.3 is closely associated with the state of Saxony.

"With this exciting and distinctive vehicle, we ensure customer demand and thus secure capacity utilization and jobs on our production lines. Our team is ready to build a special model every year. All colleagues involved in this project have done a great job," he said.

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE is available with two engine options: 210 kW (286 PS) and 240 kW (326 PS). At both output levels, the electric motor produces a maximum torque of 545 Nm. In the more powerful version, the ID.3 GTX special edition accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, with the electronic control not starting until 200 km/h.

This version is available as an option for the 210 kW version. Electric power comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged at DC fast charging stations with up to 185 kW. With this power, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 26 minutes. The combined WLTP range is up to 591 km.

Since its world premiere in mid-July, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE has been on display for visitors at the Gläserne Manufaktur, becoming a major attraction.
