JAKARTA General Motors (GM) has officially suspended some of the production of its two largest and most expensive electric vehicles, namely GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ. This step was taken to adjust the output to the changing market dynamics.

It was reported that InsideEvs, Friday, August 29, the termination of production will last more than a month, starting after Labor Day until October 6. This decision affects 160 employees who served in two production shifts at the Factory Zero plant, Detroit-Hamtramck.

According to a GM spokesperson, this temporary adjustment is part of the company's standard strategy to align production with market demand. The decision also follows a temporary layoff of 200 employees in April, caused by the slowdown in sales of large electric vehicles.

The data show that consumer interest shifts from expensive models such as the GMC Hummer EV and the GMC Sierra EV to more affordable options, such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and the terbitr EV.

This phenomenon is not only experienced by GM. Other manufacturers such as Ford and Tesla also face similar challenges to their electric pickup model. Data from market research firm AutoForecast Solutions shows that sales of electricity pickups in the US decreased 4 percent in the first half of 2025. This number is in stark contrast to 1.6 million units of gasoline-fueled pickups sold in the same period.

Despite its advantages, the electric pickup still seems to have difficulty penetrating the market, which has been dominated by conventional gas-fueled pickups. GM hopes that with this adjustment, they can better manage vehicle inventory and respond efficiently to market trends. Affected employees will get temporary leave and remain entitled to benefits.
