JAKARTA - Two auto giants, General Motors (GM) and Hyundai announced a strategic partnership to develop new vehicles together. This collaboration is projected to generate at least 800,000 vehicles per year once production reaches its full scale.

Referring to Hyundai's global release, Wednesday, August 6, one of the deals is to develop five new vehicles together, marking an important milestone in their cooperation.

Of the five vehicles to be developed, four of them are aimed at the Central and South American markets. The four vehicles are compact SUVs, compact cars, small pickups, and medium-sized pickups. Interestingly, all of these models are designed flexibly to use both conventional and hybrid engine driving systems.

The production targets of these five vehicles are very ambitious. Hyundai and GM hope to produce more than 800,000 units per year after production reaches its full scale.

Clear Task Distribution

In this partnership, GM will lead the development of a platform for medium-sized trucks, while Hyundai will take over the work on the platform for compact vehicles and electric vans. Despite sharing the platform, each brand will still have a unique interior and exterior design, according to their respective characteristics.

"This collaboration will help us continue to provide value and choice to customers in various segments and markets," said Hyundai President and CEO

He added that their combined scale in North and South America allowed them to be more efficient in providing what customers wanted.

Meanwhile, Senior VP GM Flippan Amin, said that this collaboration aims to bring more choices to customers more quickly, and at lower costs.

Long-Term Collaboration For A Sustainable Future

In addition to vehicle development, Hyundai and GM will also collaborate in the procurement of materials, transportation, and logistics in North and South America. They also agreed to explore the use of low-emission steel as part of their commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

With the development already underway and planned launch in 2028, this collaboration shows the long-term vision of the two companies. Going forward, they will also explore further cooperation opportunities, including on battery-based electric driving systems and hydrogen fuel cells.
