JAKARTA The latest data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research confirmed the immovable dominance of two electric vehicle (EV) battery giants from China, CATL and BYD, in the first half of 2025. Together, these two companies controlled more than half of the total global EV battery installation, reaching 55.7 percent with a total of 280.8 GWh.

Referring to the CnEVPost report, Monday, August 4, during the January-June 2025 period, global EV battery installations jumped significantly by 37.3 percent to 504.4 GWh, compared to 367.4 GWh in the same period last year. This rapid growth shows that the EV industry continues to heat up around the world.

CATL reiterated its position as the world's largest EV battery supplier. The company recorded a 190.9 GWh battery installation in the first half of 2025, an increase of 37.9 percent from 138.5 GWh in the previous year. With a 37.9 percent market share, CATL remains the only battery supplier to have a market share of above 30 percent. Although slightly decreased compared to the January-May 2025 (38.1 percent) market share, this figure is still higher than the January-June 2024 market share (37.7 percent).

Meanwhile, BYD showed a very impressive growth. EV BYD battery shipments reached 89.9 GWh in the first half of 2025, surging 58.4 percent compared to 56.7 GWh in the same period last year. This spike confirmed the position of BYD in second place with a market share of 17.8 percent, an increase from 15.4 percent in January-June 2024 and also higher than January-May 2025 (17.4 percent). This significant growth of BYD is in line with its ambition to become a leading global EV producer, with many BYD models using their own homemade batteries.

Beyond the dominance of CATL and BYD, other players struggle to maintain their market share:

CALB (Chingkok) is in fourth position with a market share of 4.3 percent.

SK On (South Korea) follows in fifth place with 3.9 percent.
