JAKARTA - At the end of last year, the automotive industry was surprised by Nissan's move to decide to merge with two national competitors, namely Mitsubishi Motors and Honda.
This step must be taken by the manufacturer in order to deal with an uncertain automotive market and avoid Nissan from a slump that has approached him in recent times.
Before cutting off his partnership, Nissan had held talks with other manufacturers. But one of its competitors, Toyota, is not on the list.
This was conveyed by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda during the CES 2025 exhibition which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, United States where he said that his party did not accept any talks related to the partnership.
"Nissan did not approach Toyota regarding any mergers," Toyoda said as quoted by InsideEVs, Wednesday, January 8.
He also added that if Nissan was considering merging with Toyota, it would not be realized because it could potentially violate applicable laws.
"But even if they consider it, it will definitely violate anti-monopoly laws. So maybe they are considering it, but decide not to do it because of the rules," added the grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda.

Nonetheless, the 68-year-old is looking forward to the outcome of the merger and how competition can produce the latest cars in the future.
"If their products were quite attractive and competitive, I think it would be a good thing for competition not only in Japan but also for the world," Toyoda said.
Toyoda explained that it will strengthen relations with other partners that have been running for a long time such as Subaru, Mazda, and Suzuki. He also emphasized that the competition for the automotive industry has changed.
For Toyota, all I can say is that when we think about the car industry, maybe in the past we have been in competition between car companies about how we can increase the volume. But maybe that competition, the nature of the competition is changing," concluded Toyoda.
