Favorite Electric Car In England In 2024, Tesla Model Y Becomes The Best Selling EV

JAKARTA - Total car sales in the UK during 2024 reached 1.95 million units, an increase of 2.6 percent from the previous year.

Based on data from The Guardian's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Tuesday, January 7, electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 19.6 percent of the total or an increase of 16.5 percent from the previous year.

The impressive results are also driven by regulations that make manufacturers sell more electric vehicles every year as an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

The increase in environmentally friendly vehicles also makes Britain one of the leaders in electric car adoption worldwide, behind Norway and China.

However, sales are still lower than expected, amid a steady industry slowdown, as well as persistent concerns among buyers over higher initial costs for electric cars and access to general chargers.

The UK government is preparing to relax its sales target by 2025 to avoid imposing large fines on vehicle manufacturers under the country's zero-emissions vehicle mandate (ZEV).

However, they can avoid punishment for not achieving the main target if they sell more battery-based electric cars in the following years, or if they succeed in reducing emissions as a whole.

In the regulation, automotive manufacturers in the UK are asked to target 22 percent of electric car sales by 2024 and increase to 28 percent this year.

In addition, a number of these figures also emphasize the dominance of SUVs in the land of King Charles. SUV sales are helped by the switch to electric cars, as large vehicles have more room for batteries.

Overall, UK's best-selling 2024 car fell to Ford Puma and Kia Sportage which are SUV vehicles. Meanwhile, the country's best-selling EV is the Model Y and is the best-selling model in December 2024.
