JAKARTA - The automotive industry globally and locally is experiencing uncertainty. However, the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo) believes that the national electric vehicle segment will experience growth from year to year.
Secretary General of Periclindo Tenggono Chuandra Phoa, said that the enthusiasm of the community regarding this segment is evidenced by the sales rate of EVs which experienced growth of up to hundreds of percent in the country.
"If you pay attention to the sales rate of EVs, hundreds of percent yoy (year-over-year) has risen quite high in Indonesia. The enthusiasm of consumer buyers towards EVs is very large. Moreover, EVs have only entered two years and sales are quite good," Tenggona said during a press conference in Menteng, Wednesday, September 4.
However, he also explained that so that this trend continues to grow, strong support from various parties is needed, one of which is the government in socializing its policies to the public and automotive players who invest in the construction of CKD factories in the country.
"We need a stronger industry for the growth of Indonesian electric vehicles, namely production in Indonesia," added Tenggono.

Periclindo itself supports the government's target of wanting Indonesia to achieve the production of 600,000 domestic electric cars by 2030. Although, this association realizes that currently, there are still few producers investing in the country with limited production capacity.
"This EV is only two years old, like Wuling in one year he has produced about 20,000 EVs, while BYD is still imported (CBU) and only handed over its vehicles last month. Other brands are also not too big in capacity," Tenggono explained.
So far, several automotive brands have invested in producing domestic electric vehicles, such as Hyundai, Wuling, DFSK/Seres, MG, Chery, and Neta.
Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), national electric car production was recorded at 15,659 units during the January July 2024 period.
