BOGOR - The government has begun to prepare a long-term athlete training model by building a national sports academy that recruits talent from elementary school age.

The plan was one of the discussions of President Prabowo Subianto with the Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir in Hambalang, Bogor, Friday (19/6).

Erick said the President paid great attention to the training of young athletes as the foundation of Indonesia's sports achievements in the future.

According to Erick, the sports academy will be a sustainable training path starting from elementary school, junior high school to high school.

"Who will be the athletes in the future, from the age of 8 to 10 years, they have started to be trained," said Erick.

He explained that early childhood development was important because Indonesia was beginning to have many young talents who were able to compete internationally.

Starting from chess, motor racing to skateboarding, a number of Indonesian young athletes have begun to show achievements that have attracted attention.

Therefore, the government wants coaching to no longer be carried out when athletes have entered the competitive age, but rather start from the talent search stage.

Erick said the President also supports a long-term coaching scheme through multi-year platnas so that the development of athletes is not hampered by annual budget changes.

According to Erick, this step is part of Indonesia's preparations for the SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics.

"The President wants the training of athletes to be carried out in a long-term manner," he said.

The government hopes that this system can strengthen the regeneration of national athletes and create a more structured path of achievement from an early age.
