JAKARTA - American tennis player Coco Gauff does not want to miss her home tournament, the Miami Open, after suffering a left arm injury last week in Indian Wells which forced her to withdraw in the fourth round against Alex Eala.
Gauff will have the support of her family in the stands this week. Her home in Delray Beach is not far from the Miami Open arena.
Previously, he usually stayed at home during tournaments, then experimented by staying at hotels closer to the match location to see if it would improve his performance and results. However, it didn't work, so he went back to living at home.
"They asked, 'When do you play? What time do you play?' I said, 'I don't know. I'll probably find out 10 minutes before you guys, so just look on the internet.'," said Gauff.
"This is a week where I sometimes have to turn off my phone. But I love playing in this tournament and yes, it means a lot every time I can step on this court."
He considered skipping the Miami Open, and would likely have done so if the injury had occurred at a different time, but because of the tournament in Miami, he decided to stay.
After undergoing the examination, Gauff has recovered and is optimistic about his level of play ahead of his opening match.
"I think it's a nerve issue," Gauff said.
"Every day is different, but I think most of the time I'll be fine playing in this tournament. I may feel it sometimes on the court, but I definitely feel it less and less every day."
Gauff has won two Grand Slams, one WTA Finals, and three WTA 1000 tournaments. However, she has never had success in Miami.
In six appearances since 2019, when he was just 15, the world number four has never got past the fourth round at Hard Rock Stadium.
Now 22, she returned to the site of her first WTA Tour main draw victory - a three-set comeback win over Caty McNally.
As the fourth seed, Gauff got by in the first round. She will play against Elisabetta Cocciaretto or qualifier Darja Semenistaja in the second round.
