Champions League: Seven-goal massacre, Barcelona knocked out Newcastle

JAKARTA - The massacre of seven goals when Barcelona eliminated Newcastle United in the 16th round of the Champions League. In the second duel at Camp Nou Stadium, Thursday, March 19, 2026 WIB, Barca won 7-2 so that they qualified for the quarter finals to meet Atletico Madrid.

There was no mercy at Camp Nou when Barca hosted Newcastle. When visiting Barca's headquarters, The Magpies actually had very good capital. They successfully defeated Chelsea 1-0 in a match in the English Premier League. The victory was very convincing because it was achieved at Chelsea's home.

When they came to Barcelona, Newcastle also held Barca 1-1 in the first duel at home at St James' Park. This means that Eddie Howe's team is ready to fight to the end to get a ticket to the quarter finals.

"With the support of the fans for 90 minutes, it's hard to fight against us here [Camp Nou]," said Raphinha who scored a brace with Robert Lewandowski in the match. The Brazilian national team striker called the fourth goal of Barca which was scored by Fermin Lopez who finally killed Newcastle.

"What is clear is that after the fourth goal we played more calmly," he said again.

Barca, who last won the Champions League 11 years ago, did get a fight from Newcastle. With an offensive game, the Blaugrana immediately dominated. In fact, they were ahead when the match was only six minutes. Captain Raphinha opened Barca's goal party after completing Lopez's assist.

However, Newcastle refused to give up. They responded with an equally offensive game. As a result, The Toon Army did not have to wait long to break into the Barca goal. Elanga successfully equalized the score to 1-1 in the 15th minute.

The match turned more intense and just three minutes later, midfielder Marc Bernal brought Barca back to the lead. The 18-year-old player greeted a pass from Gerard Martin who continued Raphinha's free kick.

Again, Newcastle continued to fight. Elanga for the second time defeated goalkeeper Joan Garcia after receiving an assist from Harvey Elliot in the 28th minute. The score was again tied 2-2.

Barca again pressed Newcastle's defense. It is recorded, Lewandowski created two chances that failed to be converted into goals. Furthermore, Lamine Yamal's close-range shot still soared above the crossbar.

When the match entered the first half injury time, Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier made a mistake by bringing down Raphinha in the penalty box.

Trippier's foul, who once played in Spain and led Atletico to win the LaLiga title, made the referee point to the white line. The penalty execution was well executed by Yamal even though Ramsdale almost caught the ball. Barca also closed the first half with a 3-2 lead.

In the second half, Newcastle was sluggish. Barca showed courage by playing offensively. They didn't give the opponent any chance to develop. Moreover, the hosts had broken Newcastle's goal in the 51st minute. A goal from Lopez who welcomed Raphinha's assist changed the score to 4-2.

Barca went crazy and didn't take long to drown Newcastle. Only five minutes later, Raphinha again made an assist that was finished by Lewandowski. The score also changed to 5-2 for Barca.

After the goal, Newcastle surrendered and no longer offered any resistance. Moreover, Lewandowski then scored his second goal in the 61st minute. In 10 minutes, Barca had scored three goals that gave them a 6-2 lead.

Raphinha then closed Barca's goal party by scoring in the 72nd minute. The score changed to 7-2 and Barca qualified for the quarter finals.
