JAKARTA - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) confirmed that the change in the duration of the Indonesia Open, which began in 2027, was part of Indonesia's commitment to supporting the development of world badminton.

The Indonesia Open, which is a BWF Super 1000 level tournament starting next year, will be held for two weeks. This follows the latest changes from the International Badminton Federation (BWF) which includes several things.

Head of Foreign Affairs of the Indonesian Badminton Association, Bambang Roedyanto, said that the new format of the Indonesia Open would certainly have an impact on increasing operational costs due to the longer implementation time.

"However, PBSI considers this as a long-term investment to maintain the position of the Indonesia Open as the world's primary tournament while presenting an implementation standard that is in line with the global direction of BWF," said Bambang in a statement received.

The Indonesia Open is one of five BWF Super 1000s that are included in the upcoming calendar. The number increased by one following the rise in the level of the Denmark Open from BWF Super 750 to the highest level following the China Open, Malaysia Open, All England, and Indonesia Open.

Bambang said that this new format also provides added value from the athletes' side because of the increase in the number of participants in the singles. He assessed that it would open wider opportunities for athletes to perform at the highest level.

"With a longer tournament duration and only using two playing fields, athletes have more adequate rest time. This is expected to maintain the quality of the game and athlete performance throughout the tournament," he said.

The five BWF Super 1000 tournaments will be attended by 48 shuttlers in singles and doubles events with 32 pairs. Singles will also use a group system before entering the knockout stage.

Bambang emphasized that the Indonesia Open will also be packaged with a sportainment approach that allows the presence of various entertainment and activation elements outside the match court.

"Sportainment is an important part of bringing a more exciting viewing experience for audiences in the arena and fans who follow through broadcasts and digital platforms," he said.

In addition to changing the Super 1000 tournament, BWF also included the Super 100 tournament in the BWF World Tour calendar. In addition, they also increased the total prize significantly.
