JAKARTA - The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, hopes that the potential for gold medals that can be obtained by the Indonesian Contingent in the 2026 Asian Games can be mapped out by mid-January 2026.
The hope was conveyed by the Minister of Youth and Sports after he held an evaluation meeting with the Deputy for Sports Achievement Improvement and the evaluation team regarding the performance of Indonesian athletes at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games which had just passed.
"This is only the initial evaluation stage, the detailed analysis will be around the second week of January (2026). At that time, I also want us to be able to map the gold potential at the Asian Games," said Erick in an official statement received.
The Indonesian contingent closed the 2025 Thailand SEA Games with a sweet result. They brought home 333 medals, consisting of 91 gold medals, 111 silver medals, and 131 bronze medals.
The result exceeded the target of gold medals and ranking in the final medal standings. Indonesia departed there with a target of getting 80 gold medals and finishing in third place, but the final result could take second place.
Erick said that the strategy for determining the sports branches (cabor) that will be sent to the Asian Games later will indeed be carried out soon in early 2026 considering the preparations for the four-year sports festival are only months away.
"Because the time we have is not long, less than nine months, we have started the Asian Games so we need to immediately formulate a mature strategy and planning," he said.
In addition to targeting the Asian Games, strategies to return to winning many gold medals at the 2027 Malaysia SEA Games will also be discussed at the beginning of the year.
The implementation of the SEA Games, which is divided into four regions, namely Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak, and Penang, will be a challenge for Indonesia to be able to maintain its ranking.
