JAKARTA – Indonesia concluded the 2025 World Youth and Junior Sambo Championship by winning a total of four bronze medals.
The prestigious single-event event took place over three days, October 3-5, 2025, at the JSI Resort Convention Hall in Megamendung, Bogor, West Java. Indonesia competed against 33 other countries.
Indonesia secured four bronze medals after winning two more on the final day through Tree Apdiansyah Putra and Suryo Nugroho.
Putra, from Medan, North Sumatra, won bronze in the men's +98 kg combat weight class. In the semifinals, Putra had to face the toughness of Dastan Beishenaly from Kyrgyzstan.
"Of course, I'm proud to be able to contribute a bronze medal to Indonesia. This will certainly motivate me even more and make me work even harder to improve my skills," said Putra.
Meanwhile, Suryo Nugroho won bronze in the men's 79 kg combat class. These two athletes followed in the footsteps of Amelia Devy, who won bronze in the women's junior sport +80 kg class, and Handezka Vaktorias in the men's junior combat 64 kg class.
This achievement surpassed the target set by the Indonesian Sambo Association (PB Persambi). The national sambo body had not set any targets for the Indonesian representatives in this championship.
PB Persambi Secretary General, Arnold Silalahi, stated that Indonesia's achievement was more than satisfactory considering the short preparation period.
"We've often won bronze and silver medals at both Asian and world championships, but this is extraordinary. The preparation only lasted 10 days, and perhaps the results would have been different if we had prepared for three months," he said.
FIAS1 topped the final medal standings. They swept the gold medals to solidify their dominance as the overall champions of the 2025 World Youth and Junior Sambo Championships.
FIAS1 won 11 more gold medals on the final day of the tournament, solidifying their lead with a total of 28 gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze medals. They far outperformed all other participating countries.
Kazakstan came in second, taking home two gold medals, nine silver medals, and seven bronze medals. FIAS2 came in third, winning two gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal.
