Lionel Messi Failed To Bring Inter Miami Achieve Leagues Cup Both

JAKARTA - Seattle Sounders added a new title to their trophy cabinet on Monday, September 1, 2025 WIB, after beating Inter Miami 3-0 in the 2025 League Cup (Leagues Cup) final.

The victory in the fifth edition of the MLS (Major League Soccer) and the MX League gave Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer another trophy to add to his collection with the team, having won the MLS Cup (MLS Cup) twice and the Concacaf Champions Cup during his tenure.

"Well, I mean, obviously we are very happy with the result. I think the players are back working hard because at 1-0, the game can be won by anyone."

"They put a lot of pressure on us and that second goal helped us ease the pressure. Then you can't ask for a more beautiful ending than Paul (Rothrock) to score a third goal."

"So, obviously everyone in the stands is happy. You know, it's been a great day to be a Sounders," Schmetzer said after the game at ESPN.

The sounders who hosted first took the lead in the 26th minute at the start of the fierce match when Osaze De Rosario met Alex Roldan's accurate cross in front of Inter Miami's goal. He pushed it past Oscar Ustari to put the Sounders 1-0 up.

In a bid to catch up, Inter Miami appeared stronger in the second half and should have equalized in the 50th minute.

However, Messi fired a close-range shot that bounced over the crossbar from a point where he rarely missed.

Messi's failure came as a surprise, but his teammate, Tadeo Allende, also came as a surprise because somehow his shot went wide of goal which was just a Seattle goalkeeper, Andy Thomas.

Inter Miami continued to control the game in the second half. However, Seattle Sounders took control again 10 minutes before the end of normal time.

A goal in the 84th minute from a penalty kick and Paul Rothrock five minutes later broke Inter Miami's dream.

In addition to trophies and money prizes, Sounders also get automatic tickets to the last 16 of the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Seattle is the only MLS team to have won all five annual trophies available to clubs in the league, having previously won the MLS Cup (MLS Cup), Concaf Champions Cup, Open US Cup (Lamar Hunt US Open Cup), and Supporters' Shield.

Meanwhile, the failure saw Inter Miami fail to match the record in the 2023 Leagues Cup when they won it with the newly arrived Lionel Messi.
