Rodrigo Bentancur suffers concussion in Liverpool clash

JAKARTA - Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur passed out on the pitch in the sixth minute of the match against Liverpool at the Carabao Cup, Thursday, January 9, 2025.

The medical staff immediately ran to the field when the Uruguayan player lay on the pitch, with players from both teams looking worried.

He received treatment before being carried off the field in the 14th minute and was immediately taken to the hospital for a test.

Clashes collapsed after trying to head up the ball which was kicked from a corner kick situation.

After the match, Spurs immediately uploaded information that Bentancur was conscious and spoke before undergoing further examination.

"All I know is that he realized when he left the field. Obviously it was a kind of head injury, but he realized when he left the field."

"I'm not very clear how it happened, unless I call the doctor here."

"It's a head injury. There are concerns from the players out there. So obviously something happened," said Ange Postecoglou at the time.

Fans applauded as he was carried off the pitch. Bentancur gave a thumbs up to Spurs bench as he left the pitch.

On Friday, January 10, 2025, Spurs reported that Bentancur had finished undergoing observations.

Postecoglou in a post on its latest Spurs X account confirmed that the 27-ahun player suffered a concussion.

"Good news, fortunately he was hospitalized and they did all the tests to make sure everything was fine."

"Yes, everything is fine, he has returned home and is fine, feeling fine," said Postecoglou.

"We will obviously follow the protocol now, a few weeks where you have to make sure everything is fine. But fortunately it looks like a concussion, but nothing more than that," said the coach.

Australian coaches further praised their players for how they handled the incident.

"It was sad and you saw it, especially Pedro (Porro) who was the first person there. He knows it's a sad situation."

"However, I think the players handled it well and the medical team handled it well. As I said, thank God everything is fine," said the Australian coach.

In that match Tottenham Hotspur won 1-0 against Liverpool in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup first leg.

The winning single goal was scored by Lucas Bergvall in the 86th minute, which sparked protests from Liverpool for being considered controversial.

You see, just before scoring, Bergvall committed a serious foul on Kostas Tsimikas, which was left by the referee.

Despite the incident and some controversy in the party, Spurs tried to continue his positive record.

They will travel to England's fifth division team, Tamworth, for the FA Cup Third Round match on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
