Participating In PSSI, Menpora Agrees To STY Contract Determined After The 2024 U-23 Asian Cup

JAKARTA - The fate of the extension of the contract for the Indonesian national team coach, Shin Tae-yong (STY) will be determined after the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar.

"In principle, we are following what PSSI will do. We will see the progress, of course we believe it is the best," said Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Ariotedjo, Ariotto Ariotedjo, quoting Antara.

Previously, PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, January 26, stated that the 2024 Qatar U-23 Asian Cup which will start on April 15 to May 3 will be one of the parameters for STY's performance assessment as national team coach.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, who is familiarly called Dito, called Erick's decision an ideal parameter that determines the sustainability of STY's contract.

"As far as I know, lastly, Mr. Erick Thohir mentioned the challenge for coach Shin Tae-yong in the U-23 Asian Cup. So maybe that's one of the parameters," he said.

He believes that PSSI will have many variables and a wise balance of STY's career as a football coach in Indonesia.

It is certain that the Ministry of Youth and Sports will continue to monitor every development of the performance of the national team under STY.

"Later, of course, we will also monitor and see the progress," he said.

Previously, STY managed to bring Asnawi Mangkualam and his friends qualified for the round of 16 in the 2023 Asian Cup which rolled on January 12 to February 10, 2024, until they were finally eliminated by Australia with a score of 0-4.

The U-23 Indonesian national team is one of 16 teams that will compete in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup tournament in Qatar.

Of the 16 teams competing, the Garuda U-23 squad will compete with 15 other best Asian teams.

The Indonesian national team joined Group A with the home teams Qatar, Australia, and Jordan. While in Group B is filled by South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and China.

In Group C, there are Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Thailand, and Tajikistan. Group D includes Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Kuwait, and Malaysia.
