Egg Prices Drop, Students And Farmers Take To The Road Demand Government Stabilize Prices

JAKARTA – Hundreds of chicken egg breeders together with the Student Executive Board (BEM) from four universities held an action in front of the Ministry of Trade office, Central Jakarta. Demonstrations (unras) were held related to the decline in egg prices among farmers.

In addition to holding demonstrations, the mass of action will also attend hearings to discuss policies that support the protection of people's laying breeders.

Rofi Yasifun, one of the breeders from Blitar, said that farmers from a number of areas took part in the action using 40 buses with 1,500 people in action.

"Today the crowd reached 1,500 people and spread over several points such as the Ministry of Commerce, in front of the Senayan DPR/MPR Complex, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Office, Japfa and the Ragunan Ministry of Agriculture, South Jakarta," said Rofi Yasifun when contacted by reporters on Monday. Hundreds of breeders and BEM students asked the government to increase the price of eggs, along with the drop in prices among farmers.

The breeders hope that the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade can absorb at least 1,000 tons of eggs from smallholder farmers for one week.

The breeders admitted that the price of eggs among farmers reached Rp. 12,500 to Rp. 13,500 per kilogram, or far below the Cost of Production (HPP) of eggs, which ranged from Rp. 21,500 to Rp. 22,500 per kilogram.

"We demand that the government immediately raise the price of eggs, because every day we lose between Rp. 8,000 to Rp. 9,000. This has been going on since the end of July, the worst losses," he said.
