JAKARTA - Iran and Afghanistan have agreed to facilitate bilateral trade and strengthen economic ties, said the interim government run by the Taliban.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid who is also Deputy Minister of Information and Culture said in a statement a meeting was held between Afghan and Iranian officials.

"With the aim of strengthening economic relations and providing the necessary facilities for trade issues between the two countries," Mujahid said.

A total of 16 points were agreed upon, including increasing working hours to facilitate the flow of goods at the Qala-e-Dogharoun Islamic border, reviewing existing tariffs for goods and services, and discussing fuel supply issues.

Last month, foreign media reported that Tehran resumed fuel exports to Afghanistan, after months of political uncertainty at home.

"In addition, the two delegations agreed to hold talks on infrastructure issues," the statement continued, adding "Iran will cooperate in the fields of health and tourism."

To note, the two sides have also maintained close contact in recent weeks, although Tehran has so far not recognized the new Taliban government, in line with the stance of the international community.
