More And More Extortion In Medan: Viral, Apologize, Released, What Do The Police Say?

MEDAN - Still rampant illegal levies (extortion) in Medan, North Sumatra. A number of extortion cases have also gone viral on social media, which of course makes residents angry and anxious.

The latest, the illegal extortion that occurred on Jalan Andalas, Pasar Baru Village, Medan Kota District, was recorded and went viral on social media. In the video, a man with glasses is seen standing in front of a motorcyclist.

While holding some money, the man is seen talking and allegedly asking motorists to pay parking fees.

"Come on, don't talk too much, just keep paying," said the man.

After the video went viral, the man immediately apologized and admitted his actions.

"I apologize for my mistake by citing parking. I beg the law enforcers, understand my mistake. And I'm just looking for rice. I apologize profusely," said the man.

On the other hand, Medan residents are not satisfied with the actions given by law enforcement to the detained thugs. The community considers that there is a need for strict punishment for the perpetrators of extortion.

Because, the thugs who were arrested often made a statement not to repeat the act plus apologized and then released it.

Regarding questions from Medan residents via social media, the Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Police, Kombes Hadi Wahyudi, emphasized that the police will take firm action against all forms of thuggery that disrupt order.

"If there is sufficient evidence that he committed a criminal act, we will take strict action. It is always submitted, if there is sufficient evidence, we will definitely take firm action," said Kombes Hadi to VOI, Wednesday, September 29.

Therefore, Kombes Hadi asked residents who experienced acts of thuggery or extortion not to hesitate to report to the police station.

"Come on, the community, let's report it. He is the one who experienced the incident, he has video evidence, let's report it, don't just make it viral. So make an official report, so that the police will follow up with sufficient criminal elements," said Kombes Hadi.

Kombes Hadi ensured that the police responded to residents' complaints. The handling is also in accordance with the applicable regulations, therefore it cannot be assessed one by one case.

"That's only viral, that's what was in Asahan, it went viral, then the driver made a report processed, even chased. People don't just see one case, but also look at other cases," he said.

In addition, the North Sumatran Police ensure that they continue to make prevention efforts by carrying out routine patrols

"For example, if there is not enough evidence that they have committed a criminal act, we will develop them," said Kombes Hadi.
