Disagree With Government, PKS: General Elections Commission Has The Right To Determine Election Times

JAKARTA - Member of Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) faction, Mardani Ali Sera, responded to the government's statement through the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md who proposed the schedule for voting for the general election to be held on May 15, 2024.

According to him, the government may provide input on the timing of the election. However, he reminded us that the determination of the schedule for the upcoming 2024 general election is a matter of the General Elections Commission (KPU).

"The KPU has the right to stipulate it legally. So the government needs to consider the opinion of the KPU and of course the DPR, in this case, Commission II", said Mardani, Wednesday, September 29.

Therefore, Mardani said, his faction did not agree with the government in terms of the proposed time for the 2024 General Election. PKS, he said, followed the time proposed by the KPU, namely February.

"The KPU option in February provides more opportunities for organizers to work well", said Mardani.

As previously reported, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, assessed that the proposed 2024 Simultaneous Election date proposed by the KPU on February 21, 2024, was ineffective. Because, on that date, many processes are too long, both backward and forwards.

Therefore, Mahfud assessed that the right time to hold the 2024 general election was May 15. According to him, the date is very rational to be submitted to the KPU and DPR.

"So that May is the right one. May 15 is very rational according to the government. But later we will hear what the KPU and DPR look like", said Mahfud.
