JAKARTA - SoftBank is preparing a new platform that processes media articles into data for the development of generative artificial intelligence. The scheme is designed so that news content can be used to improve AI capabilities while protecting intellectual property rights.
Kyodo News quoted Wednesday, July 22, saying that the platform called GaranAI started to be tested on Wednesday. SoftBank also opened registration for AI developers who want to use it.
A number of publishers will supply articles to GaranAI and receive rewards. They include Mainichi Newspapers, Sankei Shimbun, Kyodo News, as well as several local newspaper companies in Japan.
SoftBank will convert articles into a format that is difficult to revert to their original form. The content is then processed again into data that is easier for AI systems to use.
The data resulting from the processing is then sold to AI developers. SoftBank hopes that the use of media content can help improve the accuracy of AI responses to user questions.
The platform was set up amid growing concerns over copyright infringement and the spread of misinformation.
Through this scheme, AI developers can buy processed data. Media and publishers that provide content still receive compensation.
The trial version of GaranAI will be improved for six months. SoftBank is targeting the final version to be launched in January next year or thereafter.
The scope of the platform will also be expanded. In addition to newspapers, SoftBank wants to receive copyrighted content from online media, museums, and various other sectors.
