SURABAYA - Deputy Mayor of Surabaya Armuji encourages traditional market traders in Kota Pahlawan, East Java, to be technology-friendly, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The ability of traditional market traders needs to be upgraded. Especially now that the Surabaya City Government is partnering with three applicators, such as GoJek, Grab and Shopee," Armuji said while chairing a coordination meeting of three applicators at Surabaya City Hall, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, September 28.

The coordination meeting was attended by the Economy Section, the Cooperatives and MSMEs Service, PD Pasar Surya, the Communications and Information Office as well as representatives of three online applicators GoJek, Grab and Shopee.

According to Armuji, the coordination meeting discussed the connectivity of traditional market traders with digital markets. For this reason, he hopes that the three applicators will provide training and promotion facilitation for traditional market traders.

The Deputy Mayor stated that so far there are 10 markets managed by the Surabaya Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) Office and 67 markets managed by the Regional Company (PD) Pasar Surya.

"Several applicators have collaborated with traders in a number of markets including Blauran and Kapasan Markets to use the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) in payments. This needs to be expanded further," he said.

Armuji explained that the Surabaya City Government will gradually install free wifi access in traditional markets. According to him, in October, there are eight markets that are planned to be installed with wifi.

In addition, he continued, training will be conducted for market traders to be able to market their products using digital platforms.

"A number of applicators will work together to upgrade the capabilities of market traders. So it must be prepared from now on," said Armuji.

He also mentioned that the spirit of economic recovery that was inflamed by the Surabaya City Government required the collaboration of various parties to ensure the welfare of its citizens.
