Freed From Prison In Canada, Huwawei Boss Returns To China On Carter Plane

JAKARTA - One of Huawei's bosses, Meng Wanzhou, left for his hometown in China by charter plane after being released from prison in Canada, Friday, September 24.

Thanks to the hard work of the Chinese government, Meng left Canada on a plane chartered by the Chinese government to return home and meet her family, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday, September 25.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian welcomed the return of the female boss of the largest information technology company on his personal Weibo account.

Meng, who is Huawei's financial director, also thanked the Chinese Embassy in Canada, the team of lawyers and colleagues.

"Even in very difficult times, there is always hope," said the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei.

Meng attended a virtual hearing in federal court in Brooklyn, United States, Friday local time, to sign a suspension of prosecution agreement in the fraud case he was accused of.

Under the agreement, Meng was not charged in the United States and the extradition process in Canada was suspended, said William Taylor, one of Meng's lawyers.

"He has not pleaded guilty and we fully hope that the charges will be dismissed after fourteen months. Now, he will be free to return home to be with his family," Taylor was quoted as saying by the Global Times.

Meng has been in custody in Canada for nearly three years after being caught at the country's airport in December 2018.

Shortly after Meng's arrest, Chinese authorities arrested two Canadian nationals, Michael Korvig and Michael Spavor, on espionage charges.

Since then, China-Canada bilateral relations have deteriorated. Even in the last three years, the security in front of the Canadian Embassy building on Dongzhimen Wai Street, Beijing, has been increased so that it looks more conspicuous than other embassies in the area.
