KRI Teluk Jakarta-541 Karam At Peraian Kangean Island, 55 Crew Members Congratulations

JAKARTA - The KRI Teluk Jakarta-541 sank in the waters northeast of Kangean Island, East Java. The ship, which was carrying out sea support operations for shifting logistics to the eastern region, suffered a leak which caused the KRI Teluk Jakarta to sink at a depth of 90 meters.

Head of the Indonesian Navy Information Service (Kadispenal) First Admiral TNI Mohamad Zaenal said that this incident took place on Tuesday, July 14, at around 09.00 WIB. At the time of the incident, said Zaenal, the height of the sea waves at the location was around 2.5 meters to 4 meters.

"The KRI Teluk Jakarta-541, which is carrying out a sea support operation for shifting logistics to the eastern region, suffered a leak which resulted in it sinking at a depth of about 90 meters in the waters northeast of Kangean Island," Zaenal said in his written statement.

Zaenal said all crew members of the ship, totaling 55 people, were declared safe and had been evacuated to Surabaya.

"54 crew members were rescued by KM Tanto Sejahtera who was sailing in position 5 NM from the scene, 1 crew was helped by KM Dobonsolo," said Zaenal.

All the crew members who were rescued were being picked up by KRI RE Martadinata-331. Furthermore, the crew will be brought to Surabaya.

Quoting from the World Navies: Hazegray page, the KRI Teluk Jakarta (541) is the eleventh ship of the Indonesian Navy landing type warship. KRI Teluk Jakarta was built by VEB Peenewerft, Wolgast, East Germany in 1979 for the East German Navy with hull number 615.

This ship of the Frosch-I / Type 108 type was later purchased by the government for the Navy and entered the fleet in 1994. KRI Teluk Jakarta served as a landing fleet for the Navy's Marines and also as a logistics carrier.

KRI Teluk Jakarta weighs 1,900 tons, with dimensions of 90.70 meters x 11.12 meters x 3.4 meters. Powered by 2 diesel engines, 2 shafts produce 12,000 bhp which can propel the ship up to 18 knots. Manned by a maximum of 42 sailors and capable of carrying cargo up to 600 tonnes.
