United States '4th Of July' Commemoration Marked By An Increase In The Number Of COVID-19 Patients

JAKARTA - Right today, the people of the United States (US) are commemorating their independence day which falls on July 4. Various events and activities such as parades and fireworks mark America's independence from Britain since 1776.

However, this year's commemoration is planned to only be carried out in a few locations. This is because several regions and major cities in the US have seen a surge in new cases of COVID-19 infection in the last 14 days.

Cities in the states of Texas, Florida, Arizona and California, are now at the center of the new spread of the coronavirus in the US. At least of the nearly 11 million cases worldwide, 2.7 million cases of COVID-19 of them occurred in the US with the number of patients who died reaching more than 128,000 people, as summarized from the BBC, Saturday, July 4.

The head of the US National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, warned in advance of an increase in daily cases of COVID-19 in the US. This can happen in the absence of national measures to slow it down.

"As the level of testing increases, so does the percentage of positive results for infection. Hospitalization also skyrocketed," he said as quoted by Reuters.

This situation also made the US public highlight President Donald Trump's attitude in handling the crisis. Moreover, his comments on social media Twitter seemed to ignore the addition of new cases of COVID-19 infection.

Instead of keeping his distance, Trump plans to invite about 7,500 people to a fireworks display to commemorate the '4th of July' United States Independence Day, at Mount Rushmore National Monument, South Dakota. I don't know whether the fireworks display will be held by following health protocols such as rules of keeping distance or not.

"We are going to have an extraordinary night. It will be a fireworks display that many people have never seen before. It will be a very exciting celebration," Trump said.

It was not clear why Trump celebrated US Independence Day on Mount Rushmore. However, the South Dakota region did indeed become the basis for Trump's votes in the 2016 presidential election.

Regarding Trump's plan to hold a fireworks display on Mount Rushmore, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem ensures that its citizens adhere to existing health protocols by wearing masks and imposing physical distancing.

Based on the distribution map made by Johns Hopkins University as of today, the reported number of Covid-19 infection cases in the US has reached 2.83 million positive cases with 131,485 deaths. This number puts the US as the country with the most positive cases in the world, followed by Brazil in second place with 1,496,858 cases, and Russia with 660,231 cases.
