Germany Prepares Mission To Rescue 10,000 People From Afghanistan

JAKARTA - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is concerned about the return to power of the Taliban fundamentalist group on Afghan soil. Merkel promised to immediately evacuate up to 10,000 people from Afghanistan.

The rescue mission was carried out to reduce the risk of bloodshed in Afghanistan. Launching CNA, Monday, August 16, Merkel made the statement at a closed meeting of the Christian Democratic Party.

Merkel revealed that fears of greater bloodshed were at the root. Moreover, the development of the situation which is getting worse day by day in Afghanistan makes Germany have to rush to carry out a rescue mission.

"We are witnessing difficult times ... Now we must focus on the rescue mission," Merkel said.

Merkel added that not just anyone will be evacuated. Some of them are Afghan staff, human rights activists, lawyers, and those considered most at risk of becoming victims of violence.

Not only that, Merkel also made other efforts so that more people could be saved. Cooperating with countries directly bordering Afghanistan, one of them.

The hope is that those who fled Afghanistan can be accommodated for the time being. "This topic will keep us busy for a very long time," Merkel added.

Merkel's wishes appear to be in line with those of German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. He said Germany was ready.

Even now, special forces and paratroopers have been deployed to assist the evacuation process. "As long as it is possible, the German army will get as many people out of Afghanistan as possible and maintain the air passage," he said.
