Tomorrow, 17 Salemba Prison Prisoners Will Be Free To Breathe Free Air

JAKARTA - A total of 35 inmates (prisoners) out of 3,180, received general remission II on the 76th Republic of Indonesia's Birthday on August 17.

At least 17 of the 35 convicts can breathe free air, after cutting their sentences. While the rest are still serving subsidiary sentences.

Based on data from the Salemba Rutan Remission Decree, 501 inmates received General Remission (RU) I and 35 inmates received RU II.

The total number of inmates at the Salemba Class I Rutan, Central Jakarta who received a General Remission (RU) or a reduced sentence during the commemoration of the 76th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia was 536 inmates.

Head of the Salemba Class IA Detention Center, Central Jakarta, Yohanis Varianto, said remissions were given to prisoners who had met both administrative and substantive requirements, according to Law no. 12 of 1995 concerning Corrections and Presidential Decree No. 174 of 1999 concerning Remissions.

"The administrative requirement is that the convict in question has been sentenced, or has permanent legal force, and has served a minimum sentence of 6 months in criminal terms for general criminal cases," said Karutan Salemba when contacted by VOI, Monday, August 16.

Yohanis explained that only 46 percent of inmates from a total of 1,167 people in the Salemba detention center were eligible to be proposed for general remission on August 17, 2021.

In addition to administrative requirements, prisoners must also behave well during their criminal period.

"This remission is expected to be a stimulus for inmates to behave well and play an active role in the coaching program organized by the Central Jakarta Class I Detention Center," he said.
