Online Driver Suddenly Becomes Sultan, Breaks Bank Mandiri ATMs To Buy A BMW 318i Car And Pay Debts

MAGELANG – Two perpetrators of theft of money at an automated teller machine (ATM) of Bank Mandiri that occurred in a supermarket on Jalan Sarwo Edi Wibowo, Magelang Regency on Friday, August 13, were arrested by the Magelang Resort Police together with the Jatanras Polda Central Java.

The Magelang Police Chief, AKBP Ronald A. Purba, revealed that the two perpetrators had the initials RA (35), a resident of Piyungan, Bantul Regency, and ARW (26), a resident of Ngaglik, Sleman Regency.

"Both of them were arrested on Saturday (14/8) at around 02.00 WIB. It took less than 24 hours for our members who joined the Jatanras Polda to catch the perpetrator," said AKBP Ronald, quoting Antara, Sunday, August 15.

Ronald explained, the perpetrator entered the supermarket by climbing through the side and then breaking through the ceiling. After entering the shop, all televisions and CCTV cameras were sprayed with paint. The theft was carried out when the store was closed.

Then, continued Ronald, the perpetrator welded the newly filled ATM. At that time it was filled with around Rp. 500 million and based on an audit at the time of the crime scene (TKP) the loss reached Rp. 470 million.

The money from the crime, continued the Police Chief, was used by the suspect to buy a BMW car, buy some clothes, and pay off debts.

"The two perpetrators have carried out similar actions in the areas of Kebumen, Sukoharjo and Temanggung, but failed," he said.

He mentioned the confiscated evidence, namely Rp113 million in cash, a BMW 318i car, a number of equipment such as crowbars, LPG cylinders, a Suzuki Ertiga car as a means of committing crimes.

Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Magelang Police, M. Alfan, said that before taking action the two perpetrators who worked as "online drivers" had conducted a survey before the shop closed to study the situation.

According to Alfan, the success of catching the two perpetrators was the result of checking CCTV, including checking the CCTV at the previous crime scene in Kalinegoro, Mertoyudan, which failed.

The perpetrators are threatened with article 363 of the Criminal Code, namely theft with a weight with a maximum penalty of 7 years in prison.

The ARW suspect admitted that the Rp470 million was divided equally. His share of the money was used to buy a BMW car in cash amounting to Rp90 million.
