Jokowi: Wearing Masks And Limiting Mobility Reflects The Spirit Of Hijrah

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the COVID-19 pandemic had forced people to adapt when carrying out daily activities, including religious activities. This must be done as an effort to protect yourself from exposure to the virus.

"The threat of COVID-19, especially the Delta variant, has forced us to change and make adjustments to various activities, including religious activities," he said as quoted from the Instagram account @jokowi, Tuesday, August 10.

He gave an example of adjusting religious activities during the pandemic, namely having takbir nights and Eid prayers at their respective homes.

"It is an act of kindness and it is an example of the hijrah mandated by the Prophet Muhammad SAW. The awareness to be better, to be willing to sacrifice for bigger things," said the former governor of DKI Jakarta.

Jokowi also said that the COVID-19 pandemic provided many valuable lessons to ponder. He also mentioned the struggle of the Prophet Muhammad's da'wah and this should be an example for Muslims in the country.

"The brotherhood of the muhajirin and the ansar in advancing the struggle for the prophet's da'wah is an example of the obedience of Muslims. Wearing masks, maintaining distance, and limiting mobility reflect the spirit of hijrah in our health behavior," he said.

"All of this is to avoid COVID-19, for safety and health together. Building health and building a healthier lifestyle also leaves behind habits that are detrimental to health," added Jokowi. Furthermore, he invited all Muslims to strengthen ukhuwah Islamiyah, watoniyah , and Basariyah. In addition, Jokowi asked the public to increase their attitude of religious moderation, tolerance, inclusiveness, and ta'awun or help between people.

"Spread Islamic values rahmatan lil alamin. Imitate the character of the prophet by teaching togetherness and tolerance and avoiding symbols of hatred," he said.

Not only that, he also thanked scholars, kiai, habib, and also leaders of other religious communities who have always helped the government in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Let's enter the new year full of hope, with prayer and faith. May Allah SWT always bless and protect the Indonesian nation. Soon to be freed from the plague and its distress," he concluded.
