Ex-Corruption Convict Emir Moeis Becomes Commissioner, KPK: Public Officials Must Be Filled With Anti-Corruption And Integrity Figures

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) assesses that public positions should be filled with anti-corruption figures and have a good track record.

This was conveyed by Acting KPK Spokesperson for Prevention Ipi Maryati in response to the appointment of former corruption convict Izedrik Emir Moeis as commissioner of PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda since last February 18.

"For the KPK, public officials should be role models. So that public positions must be filled with anti-corruption figures and have a good track record," Ipi told reporters, Friday, August 6.

He said this good track record is important because a person who sits as a public official must have integrity in order to fight corruption.

"Besides the aspect of competence, integrity is an absolute requirement that every public official must possess," he said.

"So it's not only a matter of ethics and propriety, but I think this is also in line with the spirit of this nation to fight corruption," added Ipi.

For information, Emir Moeis is a former prisoner in the bribery case for the construction of the Tarahan Steam Power Plant or PLTU, Lampung. In 2014, the PDI-P politician was sentenced to 3 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 150 million, subsidiary to 3 months in prison.

The judge assessed that Emir Moeis was proven to have received a gift or promise from the United States Alstom Power Incorporate consortium and Japan's Marubeni Incorporate amounting to US$357,000 while serving as Deputy Chairman of the House Energy Commission.

The money was given as a gift because he made the Alstom Power consortium the winner of the Tarahan Steam Power Plant (PLTU) project, Lampung, in 2004.
