MAKASSAR - Makassar Mayor Moh Ramdhan Pomanto said he was proud and would give appreciation to the weightlifting athlete from Makassar, South Sulawesi, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah. Rahmat made the nation proud because he won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

"I will coordinate with KONI. We have prepared rewards (awards) for outstanding athletes, although there are not many (guidance funds), but God willing, it is a form of attention from the Makassar City Government," Ramdhan said while talking to Rahmat via video call in Makassar, quoted by Antara, Thursday, July 29.

The man who is familiarly called Danny Pomanto stated that outstanding athletes like Rahmat deserve an award. Danny is optimistic that Rahmat's results will encourage and motivate other athletes in Makassar City to be able to fight for achievements in the national and international arenas later.

According to him, sports athletes such as Rahmat Erwin can prove that Makassar children have extraordinary talents, so other young athletes should emulate them to make achievements.

"People in Makassar are very proud, you make the immunity of our citizens increase. We are proud that you can prove that Makassar children have extraordinary talents, able to achieve achievements in the Olympics," he said. Danny.

Separately, Rahmat's biological mother, Ami Asun Budiono, admitted that he was very proud that his son could win a bronze medal in the international competition, the Olympics. Indeed, from the beginning, Rahmat aspired to be a champion, even though he had not yet won a gold medal.

"Alhamdulillah, it is thanks to his struggle and hard work that he was able to achieve his goals and break his father's record. We parents are how to encourage him to become a champion," said Ami, who is also her child's coach.

The medals won at the Olympics, he said, were the fruit of his discipline and efforts to win. Because, a weightlifter must have strong will, discipline, regular rest and most importantly regulate emotions.

With this achievement, said Ami, it will be a motivation for Rahmat to participate in other championships such as PON, Asian Games, SEA Games, and other championships. He hoped that the state would enter his name as Indonesia's representative at the event.

Since childhood, Rahmat has inherited the talent of his father Erwin Abdullah and Ami as weightlifters.

"Since childhood, he often saw his father practicing. When he was 12 years old, he started to practice, and won a local competition. That's where we saw our son has talent. So we took good care of him, because he was an only child," he explained.

Ami said, before competing in the Olympics, Rahmat had given the news that during warm-up practice he suffered a minor injury to his hamstring. However, because of his strong will and desire to win, he tried to take part in the match and managed to climb the podium in third place to get a bronze medal.

"Maybe if he didn't have a hamstring, Rahmat could have gotten more. But this result certainly makes us proud, because it's the result of his hard work so far," added Ami.

Rahmat Erwin won a bronze medal after competing in the 73 kilogram class at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan. He performed impressively in Group B, successfully lifting a total weight of 342 kilograms, from the Snatch (direct) 152 kilograms and the Clean and Jerk (two stages) 190 kilograms.
