JAKARTA - The crazy increase in new cases of COVID-19 has made the government recalculate the national economic growth which is the biggest impact of the coronavirus.
Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani said pressure on economic growth was very likely if the surge in daily COVID-19 cases continued.
In a tough scenario, economic growth is projected to only reach a maximum level of 3.7 percent this year.
This condition is likely to be faced by Indonesia if the spread of COVID-19 continues to peak until more than the second week of July 2021 which is then followed by the extension of social restrictions until the third week of August.
"In this situation, the pace of the economy is relatively slower," he said in a webinar organized by Bisnis Indonesia, Wednesday, July 7.
Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani added, it is believed that the pace of recovery will only occur at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2021, which means it has entered the end of the year.
As for the moderate or mild scenario, the daily case rate should not continue to peak until the second week of this month.
In addition, strict social restrictions are in effect until the first week of August. If this happens, then the rate of recovery can already be felt in the same month.
"In a moderate scenario, annual economic growth could reach the level of 4.5 percent," said the Minister of Finance.
Regarding the national economy, Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Chamber of Occasional and Industry (Kadin) Anindya Bakrie said that it was currently Kadin's job to ensure that it would partner with the government to restore the national economy.
"So Kadin's task is to ensure that it can partner strategically with the government in the recovery of the national economy, especially in the health and economic fields," Anindya said as quoted by Antara.
Anindya conveyed that Kadin would think of solutions to the challenges faced by the Indonesian nation today due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We have to really think about how the national economy is not going to be easy, especially tomorrow the emergency PPKM will start. It's practically a lockdown like at the beginning of the pandemic," he said.
Anindya said that his party will support the General Chair and management of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce for the period 2021-2021 in carrying out their duties. "The point is how the function and role of Kadin is focused on national economic recovery," he said.
Anindya said that in dealing with the economy, Kadin would encourage MSME players in all regions in Indonesia to be able to rise, develop, and advance to the level of adopting digital technology.
Meanwhile, in terms of handling health problems, Anindya said that there needs to be a health industry so that it no longer imports from abroad.
"So we focus on health even if we can create a health industry so as to prevent imports and lastly how can we help MSMEs so that their businesses do not close and there are no layoffs (employees)," he said.
