BANDUNG - The West Java Provincial Government plans to divert budget allocations to support the COVID-19 response following the government's decision to implement an Emergency Community Activity Restriction (PPKM) from 3 to 20 July 2021 in Java and Bali.

West Java Governor M Ridwan Kamil said there were IDR 140 billion of funds from 11 infrastructure projects in the West Java region that could be diverted to support emergency handling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"So this budget is to subsidize free medicines for COVID-19 patients who are self-isolating. That will be our responsibility," he said when delivering a virtual press statement in Bandung, quoted by Antara, Thursday, July 1.

"We took the funds from the 11 infrastructure projects earlier and hopefully this will help with the handling of COVID-19," continued Kang Emil.

The governor explained that after the sweep, there were a number of projects whose implementation could be postponed until next year or the volume of the budget reduced.

"Finally, we found a suggestion that there are 140 billions (Rp) we can replace from 11 projects," he said.

According to him, the funds from the budget transfer will be used to provide subsidies to residents.

Residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, would later be able to submit requests for free drugs or supplements to the West Java Provincial Government.

The governor said the provincial government had decided to shift the budget allocation to support health workers who work hard to treat COVID-19 patients and help residents who have difficulty buying drugs and supplements while undergoing self-isolation.

Kang Emil realized that the Emergency PPKM policy as well as the transfer of budget allocations to deal with the spread of COVID-19 would have an impact on the economic recovery process and cause inconvenience to residents.

"I want to start this narrative by apologizing to all the people of West Java because 27 regencies/cities will experience an unpleasant situation...," he said.

"This does not only apply in West Java but on the islands of Bali and Java," added Kang Emil.

The governor also reminded residents to remain disciplined in carrying out health protocols to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
