COVID-19 Bed Almost Collapsed, Anies Baswedan Adds 34 Referral Hospitals

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan admitted that the capacity of isolation beds and ICUs at the COVID-19 referral hospital was running low, and even almost collapsed.

The bed capacity or bed occupation ratio (BOR) for isolation of COVID-19 patients currently reaches 90 percent. Meanwhile, the BOR for the ICU specifically for COVID-19 reached 81 percent. In fact, the DKI Provincial Government has recently increased the number to a total of 10 thousand beds.

"This sends a message to all of us that we are adding beds, increasing hospital capacity, but the increase is too fast," said Anies at DKI City Hall, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, June 22.

Therefore, Anies admitted that his party had added 34 COVID-19 referral hospitals since June 17. Currently, there are a total of 140 referral hospitals. In total, there are 8,524 isolation beds and 1,186 ICU rooms.

"If only last week the capacity had not been increased, it would have reached 100 percent. Now there is room for additional hospitals (referrals)," he said.

Furthermore, Anies asked the public not to put the COVID-19 problem as a statistic. The pandemic cannot dwell on the number of cases or not.

He imagines how worried families will feel when their members are exposed to COVID-19, as well as patients who need intensive care because of exposure.

"These are our brothers, these are our citizens. Every 1 number mentioned is 1 life, it's a child, it's our father, mother, brother, sister," he said.
