Tent Collapses Due To Heavy Rain Causes Crowd Of Vaccinations, Ridwan Kamil: We're Sorry

JAKARTA - West Java Governor, Ridwan Kamil, apologized for the inconvenience and crowds during the mass vaccination event at the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api (GBLA) Stadium, Bandung City, on Thursday, June 17.

The crowd started from the collapse of 11 tents due to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds at GBLA Stadium. The incident caused the vaccine injection to be moved to a building inside the stadium, which then disrupted the social distancing process.

"We as the Regional COVID-19 Handling Committee apologize for the inconvenience and crowds in mass vaccination at the GBLA Stadium. We did not anticipate in advance the possibility of a force majeure that could cause a crowd like what happened", said Kang Emil, Ridwan Kamil's nickname in a press release, reported Antara, Friday, June 18th.

To avoid similar incidents in mass vaccination elsewhere, the West Java Provincial Government together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the National Police are committed to continuing to evaluate the registration system and implementation of mass vaccination.

The mass vaccination, entitled "The Vaccination Assault", has been held since Thursday morning. The plan is for the mass vaccination target at GBLA Stadium to reach 5,000 people in the Greater Bandung area.

Kang Emil said that all stadiums in West Java would be directed to become mass vaccination sites, including the Bandung GBLA Stadium and Bogor Pakansari Stadium. The stadium was chosen because it has a fairly wide open space and good air circulation.

According to Kang Emil, vaccination must be accelerated because the government is racing with the emergence of new variants of COVID-19. "Hopefully, the community's immunity will be achieved as soon as possible through vaccines", he said.

Kang Emil also appreciated the enthusiasm of the West Java community for the success of the COVID-19 vaccination program. He appealed to the public to continue to implement strict health protocols even after the vaccine was injected.

"I would like to thank the TNI/Police who have consistently succeeded in making this COVID-19 vaccination successful. One of them is by holding a mass COVID-19 vaccination", he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the West Java COVID-19 Handling Task Force, Daud Achmad, ensured that the vaccination equipment had been quickly secured by officers at the GBLA Stadium, Bandung.

"There were no injuries due to the incident. Vaccination was continued to the building inside the stadium. However, because the place was not large enough, there was a crowd when queuing to get the vaccine", said Daud.

Before the mass vaccination tent collapsed, said Daud, people who would be injected with the vaccine lined up neatly outside the stadium and implemented health protocols. In addition, he said, the vaccination coordinator is the TNI who is in synergy with the National Police, the West Java Provincial Government, and the Bandung City Government.

"Before the rain accompanied by strong winds, mass vaccinations were running optimally. The community implemented health protocols well. The security forces also carried out their duties well", he said.
