JAKARTA - The United States Department of State announced emergency assistance worth 15.5 million US dollars (about Rp275.9 billion) for Colombia after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed 132 people and damaged hundreds of buildings.
"After the devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred today in various regions of Colombia, the Trump administration is committed to providing 15.5 million US dollars for emergency shelters, food, protection, and assessment of damage from the earthquake," the US State Department said in a post on the US social media platform, X. reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Tuesday, August 11.
"We are united in prayer with the Colombian people and ready to support President Abelardo de la Espriella and his government as they assess needs on the ground," the department continued.
Separately, US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a post on X, his department was "actively assisting" US citizens affected by the earthquake.
He also urged US citizens in Colombia to contact the US Embassy in Bogota for consular assistance.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region, about 400 kilometers (249 miles) west of the Colombian capital, Bogota, at a depth of about 107 kilometers (66 miles).
At least 111 people were killed and 87 others were injured. Meanwhile, around 1,600 buildings were damaged, including at least 61 buildings that collapsed, Colombian authorities said.
