TIMIKA - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) through the Central Papua Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center (Central Papua Quarantine) oversees the shipment of 604 tons of crude palm oil (crude palm oil or CPO) worth around Rp6 billion from Mimika Regency to Surabaya.

The commodities were loaded into 28 containers and will be sent through the Pomako Port after undergoing quarantine supervision to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

Head of Central Papua Quarantine Anton Panji Mahendra said the supervision was carried out as part of the task of the Quarantine in ensuring the safety of inter-regional media traffic as well as preventing the spread of Quarantine Plant Pests (OPTK).

"Every media carrier in the form of plants and their derivative products that are transported must be reported to quarantine. This supervision aims to minimize the risk of spreading Quarantine Plant Pest Organisms while providing assurance that traded commodities have met applicable requirements," said Anton in Timika in a written statement on Thursday, July 16.

According to Perba 14 Year 2024, there are four transmission media carriers, namely the carrier media that is subject to/undergoes quarantine measures, the carrier media that is subject to/undergoes surveillance measures, the carrier media that is not subject to quarantine and surveillance measures, and the carrier media that is subject to/undergoes quarantine and surveillance measures.

One example of a carrier media subject to surveillance action, continued Anton, is Crude Palm Oil. Surveillance is carried out in the form of type/name of goods, suitability of the type of carrier media and suitability of the number (tonnage, number of packing/packaging) and packaging number if any.

After surveillance is carried out, the type, quantity and shape of the appropriate carrier media, a quarantine certificate is issued so that CPO can be sent or issued from the port of origin to the destination area.

During the surveillance process, quarantine officers conduct administrative inspections and supervise the loading process to ensure the suitability of documents, types, quantities, and origins of commodities.

According to Anton, supervision is also an important part of maintaining the traceability of commodities so that the traffic of carrying media takes place in accordance with Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine. Currently, officers are still in the field to carry out supervision.

Anton emphasized that the supervision of strategic commodities such as CPO is not only aimed at maintaining the smooth distribution between regions, but also strengthening the national biosafety system.

"With consistent supervision, biological security is maintained and trade activities can run smoothly without neglecting aspects of protection of biological natural resources," he said.

Through this supervision, the Central Papua Quarantine continues to support the smooth distribution of regional flagship commodities while strengthening efforts to prevent the entry and spread of pests and plant diseases that have the potential to be carried through media traffic.
