Lampung Quarantine Prevents the Delivery of 670 Birds Without Documents at Bakauheni Port

Bandar Lampung - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) through the Lampung Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine (Quarantine) Center together with a joint team thwarted the shipment of 670 birds without quarantine requirements documents, in accordance with Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine at Bakauheni Port, Monday, July 13.

The disclosure was made during a joint operation with the Lampung Quarantine, the Bakauheni Port Area Police (KSKP), the Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and the Indonesian Wildlife Network (JSI) while checking vehicles that would cross over to Java Island.

The Head of the Bakauheni Port Service Unit, Lampung Quarantine, Ahmad Setianegara, said the inspection was carried out at around 20.00 WIB.

When checking one of the buses, officers found hundreds of birds hidden in the lower baggage along with the passenger's luggage.

"From the results of the examination and identification, officers found as many as 670 birds consisting of 240 pentet birds, 180 jalak kebo birds, 180 cerucuk birds, 30 beras pelatuk birds, 25 perenjak birds, 9 cipoh birds, 5 ciblek birds, and 1 glatik batu birds," said Ahmad in Bandar Lampung, Wednesday, July 15.

He explained that all the birds were known to come from Kayu Agung District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, and will be sent to the Rebo Market area, East Jakarta.

The results of the examination showed that all animals were not equipped with a Veterinary Certificate as a quarantine requirement document and were not reported to quarantine officers before being transported. Based on these findings, officers immediately detained them in accordance with applicable regulations.

After going through the process of detention, identification, and handover, all the birds were released in the Gunung Rajabasa Register 3 Forest area, South Lampung Regency.

Head of Lampung Quarantine Donni Muksydayan said the success was the result of synergy between agencies in strengthening the surveillance of media traffic carriers at the gate of the island of Sumatra.

"Inter-agency synergy is an important factor in strengthening supervision at the Bakauheni Port. Through joint inspections, we can detect and thwart attempts to ship animals without meeting the quarantine requirements before the animals leave the Sumatran region," said Donni.

According to him, the quarantine requirement is an important instrument to ensure that animal traffic takes place safely, legally, and does not have the potential to spread pests and animal diseases to other areas.

Donni added that before the case was revealed, the Lampung Quarantine had secured 2,406 animals from various delivery efforts that violated the provisions throughout 2026.

"This achievement shows that the supervision we carry out together with KSKP, BKSDA, JSI, and stakeholders is becoming more effective. Every successful disclosure is not only a form of law enforcement, but also an effort to prevent the spread of animal pests and diseases and to maintain the sustainability of biological natural resources. We will continue to strengthen synergy so that inter-regional animal traffic takes place in accordance with the provisions of quarantine," said Donni.
