JAKARTA - The National Bank Association (PERBANAS) together with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) continue to strengthen synergy in efforts to eradicate scams, online gambling, and various forms of digital financial crimes. This step is carried out as part of a joint commitment to build a safe, trusted, and ethical digital financial ecosystem, as well as improving protection for the community.
This commitment was emphasized in the OJK Banking Forum 2026 with the theme "Strengthening the Governance of Banking Information Technology and Increasing Efforts to Eradicate Financial Crimes and Online Gambling in the Digital Era" which was held at the OJK Office (15/07).
The forum was attended by the Chairman of PERBANAS and President Director of BRI Hery Gunardi, Minister of Communication and Digital RI Meutya Hafid, Chairman of the OJK Commissioner Board Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Head of the OJK Banking Supervisory Executive Dian Ediana Rae, and stakeholders of the financial services sector.
On this occasion, Hery Gunardi emphasized that the banking industry, including BRI, fully supports various steps initiated by the government and regulators in suppressing the prevalence of online gambling practices and other digital financial crimes.
Hery said that coordination between regulators, governments, and the banking industry is an important factor in narrowing the scope of criminal actors. In addition to strengthening education to the public, banks also continue to increase supervision of suspicious transaction activities through the strengthening of fraud detection systems or commonly known as Fraud Detection System (FDS).
"The banking industry, including BRI, fully supports efforts to eradicate online gambling and other financial crimes. We have been intensively coordinating with regulators to strengthen preventive measures. On the banking side, we continue to improve the use of FDS to detect transactions and accounts that show abnormal patterns. Accounts that are indicated to be used for illegal activities will be immediately followed up in accordance with applicable regulations," said Hery.
However, Hery explained that eradicating online gambling cannot be done by one party alone, but requires close collaboration between the government, regulators, law enforcement, the banking industry, and all stakeholders.
The reason is that this crime not only causes financial losses, but also has an impact on mental health, family resilience, and community welfare.
The forum also delivered a joint declaration on the strategic steps needed to maintain and improve the integrity of the national financial system and protect the public from the misuse of online gambling activities and other financial crimes to strengthen Indonesia's digital economic resilience.
On the same occasion, Friderica Widyasari Dewi emphasized that the current challenges of the financial services sector are not only to maintain the health of the industry, but also to ensure consumer protection in the midst of the increasingly developing modus operandi of digital crime.
Digital transformation, continued Friderica, must be accompanied by strengthening the governance of information technology, risk management, and consumer protection. He also invited all banking industries to make the eradication of online gambling a common commitment, not just a fulfillment of regulatory obligations.
Similarly, Dian Ediana Rae also conveyed that banking has a strategic role in maintaining the integrity of the national financial system amid the increasing threat of digital crime.
"Banking plays a central role in the national financial system and is required to always maintain public trust, so increasing efforts to prevent financial crimes that use banking products and/or services and improving information technology governance are strategic in this era of digital transformation," said Dian.
Until May 2026, OJK recorded 2.8 million business relationship refusals with prospective customers, 51,200 business relationship closures with customers that were indicated to be related to online gambling, and 32,454 accounts were blocked after going through the Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) process.
In addition, the banking industry has submitted reports of suspicious financial transactions with indications of gambling-related criminal acts in 2025 increased by 260.03%, which shows the high commitment of the banking industry as well as the magnitude of the challenge of eradicating online gambling.
Meanwhile, Meutya Hafid said that eradicating online gambling must be carried out thoroughly by cutting off all the chains of its ecosystem, not only through cutting off access to the site. Komdigi will continue to strengthen efforts to eradicate online gambling through handling content and cutting off access to various digital platforms. Until July 2026, Komdigi has handled more than 6.7 million content loaded with online gambling on various digital platforms.
"Eradication of online gambling must not stop at just cutting off access to the site, but must target the entire ecosystem. Cutting off the site must be accompanied by cutting off the accounts that are the main channel for the circulation of online gambling funds," said Meutya.
Through the OJK Banking Forum 2026, it is hoped that the synergy will strengthen efforts to prevent and handle financial crimes while increasing public confidence in digital banking services. With increasingly strong governance and sustainable collaboration, the national banking industry is expected to be able to present a safe, trusted, and integrated financial ecosystem, as well as provide increasingly optimal protection to the public in the digital era.
