JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said that receiving the arrival of the bodies of fallen American military members was one of the most difficult tasks in his post.
On his way to Dover Air Force Base to attend a ceremony honoring the repatriation of soldiers killed in the war with Iran, Trump reaffirmed his respect for their sacrifices.
"We honor our heroes, and they are indeed true heroes. In fact, they - and all of them insist on this very strongly - think that we should not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons," Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews, reported by CNN, Wednesday, July 22.
"For me, this is one of the hardest things to do as a president," he continued, "but it must be done."
Trump said when he met in person with the families of the fallen in Dover, he would convey his love.
"All I will say is: we love you. We love your child - and that's how they see the figure. They are their children. No beating around the bush, no other things," he continued.
Three of the military members who were repatriated to the US on Wednesday were killed in an Iranian attack on a military base in Jordan. Another person was killed during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone that fell in northern Iraq.
Trump, who was reluctant to comment on the details of the situation that led to their deaths, said Iran would "suffer greatly."
"They are being destroyed," he said, adding that investigations into the incident in Jordan were ongoing.
