JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Transportation Office (Dishub) has started to prepare preventive measures following the incident of a crane-carrying truck crashing into the Pedestrian Crossing Bridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Piere Tendean, South Jakarta.

One of the steps that will be taken is to install vehicle height limit signs at JPO, flyovers, and underpasses that have not been equipped.

Head of Traffic Division of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Office, Dody Setiono, said that the evaluation of the incident of a freight vehicle hitting the JPO was still being carried out. From the results of the evaluation, Dishub will strengthen mitigation steps in accordance with its authority so that similar incidents do not recur.

"The DKI Jakarta Provincial Transportation Service continues to evaluate the incident of a freight vehicle crashing into the Pedestrian Crossing Bridge (JPO)," Dody said in a statement, Friday, July 17.

Currently, Dishub is inventorying the need for height limit signs at a number of locations that do not yet have them. The signs will be installed at JPOs, flyovers, and underpasses as a warning for drivers of freight vehicles.

The vehicle height limit applied refers to Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation, namely a maximum of 4,200 millimeters or 4.2 meters.

In addition, Dishub together with the Metro Jaya Police will tighten supervision of freight vehicles. Supervision is focused on vehicle dimension compliance, loading procedures, to fulfilling traffic safety aspects as part of handling Over Dimension and Over Load (ODOL) vehicles.

On the other hand, Dishub will also increase socialization to transportation companies and drivers regarding compliance with vehicle dimension limits, safe loading procedures, the obligation to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, and compliance with traffic rules.

Regarding the proposal to install the Overheight Vehicle Detection System, Dody said the system could be one alternative to prevent vehicles that exceed the height limit from entering certain roads. However, installing the device is not the authority of Dishub.

"JPO is an asset of the Road Construction Service, so the installation of devices on infrastructure is the authority of the asset owner," he said.

Therefore, the steps that can be taken by Dishub at this time are to complete the traffic equipment in the form of vehicle height limit signs.

Dody also reminded drivers, vehicle owners, and transportation companies to be responsible for losses arising from traffic accidents, including if they cause damage to public facilities.

He explained that handling traffic accidents, the investigation process, data collection of asset damage, to law enforcement is the authority of the Indonesian National Police in accordance with the provisions of laws and regulations.
