JAKARTA - The British Prime Minister on Monday said there was an urgent need to restart the ceasefire between the United States and Iran amid the impasse in the Strait of Hormuz.

"I strongly condemn Iran's attacks on commercial vessels and our Gulf partners. These attacks must stop," Prime Minister Keir Starmer said at a joint press conference with French, German and Ukrainian leaders in Paris after the meeting, reported Anadolu (14/7).

Tensions between Iran and the US broke out again last week, which quickly increased tensions in the Middle East, although the two countries are in a ceasefire and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

Washington blames Tehran for attacks on commercial vessels sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

PM Starmer expressed his support for the negotiation process and said "we are ready" to deploy assets to help ships return to sea.

"We very much need to see the resumption of a ceasefire and negotiations on the remaining issues, along with freedom of navigation without restrictions in the strait," he said.

The US and Iran resumed mutual attacks over the weekend, with President Donald Trump saying the US "reactivated" the blockade against Iran, and would charge ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran effectively closed the main waterway during the war with the US-Israel that began in late February, and a full reopening is expected after a memorandum of understanding to end the war was signed in June.
