JAKARTA - The Padang City Government, West Sumatra, is preparing a new step to strengthen the education of the Quran for students at the middle school level (SMP) and equivalent.

Through the Tahsin, Tafsir, and Tahfiz (3T) Program, students are expected not only to be able to read the Quran, but also to understand its content and improve their memorization.

Deputy Mayor of Padang, Maigus Nasir, said the program was part of the local government's efforts to improve the quality of religious education for the younger generation.

"This program is specifically aimed at improving the quality of reading, understanding and memorization of the Quran for the younger generation, especially students at the equivalent of junior high school level," said Maigus Nasir in Padang City, Sunday.

According to him, the 3T Program is part of the Padang City Government's flagship program, namely Smart Surau. Its implementation will be coordinated with the Ta'limul Quran lil Aulad (TQA) curriculum and the Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah Wustha (MDTW) which has been implemented in various areas of Padang City.

"Through the learning of tafsir and tahfiz, we want children not to stop after finishing the Quran, but to continue to read, understand and memorize the Quran," he said.

Maigus explained that the tahsin material was focused on improving the reading of the Quran according to the rules of tajwid. Meanwhile, the tafsir learning is aimed at helping students understand the contents of the letters in Juz 30. The tahfiz aims to build the habit of memorizing the Quran continuously so that students are closer to the holy book.

The program is scheduled to be implemented simultaneously on July 16, 2026. Activities will take place every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at mosques and musallas that are the location of the TQA and MDTW in Padang City.

The Padang City Government hopes that the implementation of the 3T Program can produce young generations who have religious characters, have good morals, and make the Quran a guide in daily life.

"Through the integration of these three aspects, the Padang City Government hopes that students will not only be able to read, but also understand the content of the Quran," he said.
