JAKARTA — At least 25 people have died as a result of a heat wave that has gripped the United States over the past week, while 40 million people remain under heat alerts across the East Coast, Southeast and Southwest regions.

According to NBC News, New Jersey recorded 22 heat-related deaths, while Illinois reported one fatality and Mississippi reported two.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) warned that thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail and localized flash flooding across parts of the East Coast through Monday.

As reported by Anadolu and cited by ANTARA on Monday, July 6, flood warnings remain in effect for 34 million residents from Delaware to Connecticut, as well as New York, where forecasters expect rainfall totals of up to 3 inches (7.6 centimeters).

The severe storms have also triggered power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of customers across several eastern states.

The NWS said heat advisories remain in place across the East Coast through Sunday night.

Heat index values — which measure how hot it feels when humidity is combined with air temperature — are expected to reach between 100°F (37.7°C) and 105°F (40.5°C) in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Raleigh, Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida.

Forecasters said temperatures across much of the East Coast are expected to gradually ease this week, with daytime highs generally ranging from 70°F to 90°F (21°C to 32°C).

However, extreme heat is forecast to persist through the middle of the week in parts of the country.

Excessive heat warnings have been issued for parts of California and Arizona, including Phoenix and Tucson, from Tuesday through Thursday, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 114°F (45.5°C).

In New York City, more than 378 people have visited emergency departments with heat-related illnesses, according to the city’s health department.
