JAKARTA - Indonesian Audit Watch (IAW) reminded the government of President Prabowo Subianto to make the Rempang-Galang issue a lesson in improving national investment governance.

The resolution of agrarian conflicts, legal certainty, and protection of community rights are considered to be prioritized so that strategic projects do not leave similar problems.

"Rempang is a warning for the current government. Don't just inherit projects, but also inherit legal uncertainties, agrarian conflicts, and unresolved social wounds," said the Founding Secretary of IAW, Iskandar Sitorus, through a statement quoted on Saturday, July 4.

Iskandar explained that resolving the Rempang conflict must prioritize legal certainty, openness of information, and protection of community rights.

Moreover, the Rempang Eco-City which was initiated during the Jokowi era left serious problems in terms of governance.

Because the project, which is promoted as an investment worth Rp174 trillion from the Xinyi Group, is tainted by maladministration, ranging from the incomplete legal status of the land, the recognition of the old village to the handling of the rejection of residents which triggers the decline in trust in the government.

"This is not just a technical failure. This is a failure of structured governance. The state moves quickly for investors, but slowly for the people. The investment narrative is touted, while the legal and social foundations are ambiguous," he said.

Furthermore, Iskandar also urged this issue to be a concern for the political elite from PDIP and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). So, the resolution of the rampang project controversy can be maximized than the two parties attacking each other regarding political safaris.

"Politics is about substance, not just symbols. What is happening now is a shallow symbol war, while substantive issues such as the legacy of problematic governance at Rempang-Galang are almost untouched," he concluded.
