JAKARTA - A video showing a scuffle between a police officer and a trader at the Kramat Jati Central Market, East Jakarta, has circulated on social media and has become a public concern.
The incident is suspected to have occurred when officers carried out a crackdown on traders who exceeded the sales area limits set by the management of the Kramat Jati Central Market.
In the video uploaded to the @infojakbar24 social media account, a police officer in uniform was seen having an argument with a trader. The recording also showed the police officer refusing to be recorded.
The video uploader accused the police officer of being arrogant and intimidating traders. The incident is said to have occurred on the 80th anniversary of Bhayangkara Day.
"Please, Mr. National Police Chief, Mr. Police Chief, take action against his subordinates who are arrogant towards small people who make a living," the statement read.
The trader with the initials S who was involved in the incident explained that the incident began when his trading stall was judged to have exceeded the permitted area.
"The trade is a little bit advanced, there is a regulation. I was immediately called by Kapospol. There I said, because I don't have any subordinates, I will move it later," said S.
According to S, at that time he was unloading fruit that had just arrived at his stall.
"I was unpacking the fruit. He kept cursing me. He got angry," he said.
S admitted that he was only trying to explain his condition. However, he felt threatened regarding the permission to use the stall in the market area.
Responding to the circulating video, Head of Public Relations of the East Jakarta Metro Police, AKP Made Budi, confirmed that the police officers involved were personnel assigned to the Kramat Jati Market area.
"The police officer was on duty at the location. The East Jakarta Metro Police will investigate the truth of whether the incident is as conveyed on social media," said Made Budi.
Meanwhile, Kramat Jati Master Market Manager Agus Lamun said the problem had been resolved through communication between the parties involved.
"With good communication and clarification, this is over," said Agus when confirmed by VOI, Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Agus explained that the discipline against traders who sell beyond the area limit is a routine activity carried out by the management together with the market arrangement team.
"Every morning our officers and the arrangement team carry out routine activities to enforce and arrange traders who exceed the boundaries of their selling areas. This is not allowed according to the applicable rules and regulations," he said.
